Opinion: Rose-Hulman is Trying to Deconstruct CS Culture

I was hoping to never have to write this article, but due to increasing pressure from Res-Life, I can no longer stand by and watch our beloved institution commit to a culture war against CS students. Myself and other students in my field are being asked to abandon our culture and beliefs in pursuit of some constructed “social norm” being forced upon us. My eyes were opened to the extent of this abuse, when in an incident just before break, my RA came into my room and DEMANDED that I – PJ Mellon – TAKE A SHOWER. Honestly, I was shocked, and tried to laugh it off, but it didn’t take me long to realize he was serious. I proceeded to ignore his clearly offensive request, but just 6 hours later he came in again carrying soap and some gel I had never heard of called shampoo. What happened next is almost too painful for me to recall, but I was led to the bathroom and left alone inside until I came out having showered. The next day I couldn’t look any of my peers in the eyes. I later learned that I wasn’t the only victim. Other students have also felt attacks against CS culture. Their shame is a silent torture, being forced to abandon their culture just for the whim of the man. I hope that all students in a progressive movement can understand and come fight this oppression with us. We can no longer wait. We can no longer be silent. We can no longer sit and watch. We must rise and destroy this intolerance once and for all.
